I’m writing this article from the International Terminal at Los Angeles airport, while we wait our turn to board an overnight flight to Auckland, New Zealand. One of Adobe’s great benefits is the ability to take a sabbatical every five years; this is three weeks off in addition to your normal (very generous) allotment of vacation time.
We thought we should use this time to venture to places new to us… Continue reading
Two new (still in beta) web services have become favorite parts of my digital life: Jott and Remember the Milk.
Remember the Milk is a nicely done personal to-do list application. I’ve been using it for about two months now and it’s become the official repository for all of my “honey-do” lists. Most web apps that I have an opportunity to use are still stuck in the 1990s-era “fill… Continue reading
Very cool things are happening in the world of in-car navigation systems.
Paul Stamatiou wrote last week about the upcoming Dash Express. It’s an in-car GPS navigation system that is Internet-powered.
I already know that I want one.
Having recently been through a 1.0 product launch, I know that a lot of the effort in creating the first product is spent getting the basics down and functional and focusing on… Continue reading

On Sunday morning, my darling wife ran her first triathlon. A half-mile swim, 12 mile bike, and 3 mile run. And a whole heck of a lot of training to prepare for it.
Over the past several months, she has dedicated herself to racquetball, weightlifting, running, biking, swimming, walking … you name it, almost anything to better her condition.
Her goal was to complete the race in two hours. She beat… Continue reading
So there’s a new iPhone in the house. Not surprising, given that I’m somewhat of an Apple fanboy and gadget freak in general. What is surprising is that it’s not mine; it’s Tara’s. Tara is anything but a gadget freak. She has little patience for the often obtuse interfaces that most electronic gadgets offer. So Apple scored a hit with the iPhone – they sold one to a technophobe. (Probably… Continue reading
Sigh. Yes. I know it’s been a while since I’ve blogged.
First things first. Yes, I’m alive and well. I’m still a geek. I’m still a photographer. I’m still working on Lightroom. And still having fun doing all of these things.
So far as I know, nobody I know was on the bridge when it fell. One coworker’s brother was only a minute or two from entering the bridge at the time… Continue reading
I’ve been a bit quiet here on this blog for the last few weeks, so here’s a bit of a retrospective on what’s been happening lately…
I was barely home a week from Alaska when I shipped off again, this time to California for a few days of work on Lightroom. Over the Labor Day weekend, I met up with some friends of mine for a backpacking trip in the Sierras… Continue reading

… the workaround can be mighty long.
We were getting set to leave our lodge just outside Denali National Park on Saturday morning when we got word from the hotel office that the main highway from Fairbanks to Anchorage had washed out to the south of us. (The Anchorage paper that I’m linking ran a great aerial photograph of the washout in their… Continue reading

We have been back from Alaska now for a few days. Getting caught up on the various household responsibilities took priority for most of this week, so I’m just now getting caught up on pictures and blogging. I’ve posted a few new pictures on my Flickr account, including one of my personal favorites that I call Hide and Seek:

Sadly, those same… Continue reading

Yesterday, we drove halfway up to Denali National Park and stayed at the beautiful McKinley Princess Lodge at Trapper Creek. Today, we finished the drive and are staying at the also-beautiful Denali Princess Lodge. Sadly, we have no stunning images of the mountain to share yet. She has been hiding behind a veil of clouds all day yesterday and today. As we approach evening time, things are starting… Continue reading
